While attending a conference in Istanbul, Dr. Alithea Binnie happens to encounter a djinn who offers her three wishes in exchange for his freedom. This presents two problems: first, she doubts that he's real, and second, because she's a scholar of story and mythology, she knows all the cautionary tales of wishes gone wrong. The djinn pleads his case by telling her fantastical stories of his past. Eventually, she's beguiled and makes a wish that surprises them both.

There is so much to yell about. There’s the modern world in which you spend so long trying to work out iTunes, that it’s easier to form a band and learn the songs.

But there’s also so much to be delighted with. Like the fact that everyone in Northampton knows the sign that says ‘Family Planning Advice – Use Rear Entrance’.

Then there’s the crazy story of being brought up in a working-class street in Kent, to discover my natural father was a millionaire backgammon player who was best mates with Lord Lucan.

I’ve come to terms with the fact I’m a heap of contradictions, trying to stay young while being unable to log into any website. Trying to be respectable and mainstream (in this show there will even be a piano and a bit of singing), until I can’t help breaking into a steaming rant that would get me locked away somewhere secure if it wasn’t on a stage.

And this is stand-up, so whatever has happened in the room, in the town or in the world that day will almost certainly be in the show.

So, I’ll try to keep it to a decent length, but it could so easily end up as an evening and part of the next day.

The critically acclaimed Mark Steel’s in Town was voted the 6th best radio comedy ever and Mark is a regular on the BBC’s Have I Got News For You, QI and BBCR4’s News Quiz. He has been named newspaper columnist of the year and is author of the award-winning audiobook Who Do I Think I Am.

STRICTLY 14+ Likely to be swearing and adult content

“As polished as it was passionate, matching fiery intensity with exquisite finesse, this was a magnificent set.The Scotsman ★★★★★

“This award-winning band is forging ahead into fresh pastures new with their forward-thinking musical attitude, which flies the proud banner for Gaeldom.”  FolkWales Magazine ★★★★★

“…with Frenzy of the Meeting, Breabach have once again cemented their place at the forefront of Scottish traditional music with an album that is beautiful, exciting and filled with some much-needed optimism.” The National

“Breabach embarked on the journey from Astar to Frenzy of the Meeting with an open mind and a keen desire to explore, listeners who join them are sure to enjoy the results with an ever increasing sense of wonder.” Folk Radio UK

Having closed 2019 by winning the coveted BBC Scotland Traditional Music album of the year, the band were looking forward to a busy 2020.

2020 marked a very special year in the life of Scottish folk favourites Breabach, as it was their 15th anniversary. Throughout those 15 years the band have always looked to acknowledge and respect the origins of both the music they play and the roots of the band whilst embracing the future with new ideas, energy and belief. It is these key attributes, combined with hard work and talent, that has seen them develop into one of Scotland’s most exciting and successful folk groups. With 6 albums under their belt, a multitude of awards and a consistently full touring schedule, quite literally across the world, they look perfectly set to continue to build upon their successes.

The band started their anniversary year by teaming up with Glenturret, who distilled a special single cask 15 year-old single malt in celebration. They then headed off to Australia to perform at the iconic venue of Sydney Opera House.  Celebrations continued with a UK wide tour through February and March before the world became a very different place.

The band spent lockdown writing Dùsagadh, five new pieces of music put to animation by BAFTA award winning Cat Bruce.  This ‘virtually toured 19 venues/festivals in the UK between the 11th of February and the 1st of March, with proceeds split between both the band and participating venues/festivals.

Breabach unite the talents of Megan Henderson (Fiddle, Vocals), James Lindsay (Double Bass, Vocals), Calum MacCrimmon (Bagpipes, Whistle, Bouzouki, Vocals), Conal McDonagh (Bagpipes, Whistle) and Ewan Robertson (Guitar, Vocals, Cajon).

Inspired by dark and gripping real life events, this Royal Ballet classic depicts the sexual and morbid obsessions of Crown Prince Rudolf leading to the murder-suicide scandal with his mistress Mary Vetsera. The oppressive glamour of the Austro-Hungarian court in the 1880s sets the scene for a suspenseful drama of psychological and political intrigue as Rudolf fixates on his mortality.

Kenneth MacMillan’s 1978 ballet remains a masterpiece of storytelling and this revival marks 30 years since the choreographer’s death. Expect to see The Royal Ballet at its dramatic finest across potent ensemble scenes and some of the most daring and emotionally demanding pas de deux in the ballet repertory.

‘Love cannot kill: it brings new life.’

On a starlit night in Nagasaki, these are the words spoken by American naval officer Pinkerton to young geisha Cio-Cio-San. But as they both learn, words and promises carelessly spoken can have indelible consequences.
