The Wild Robot (U)

From DreamWorks Animation comes a new adaptation of a literary sensation, Peter Brown’s beloved, award-winning, #1 New York Times bestseller, The Wild Robot.

The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot—ROZZUM unit 7134, “Roz” for short — that is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh surroundings, gradually building relationships with the animals on the island and becoming the adoptive parent of an orphaned gosling.

Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot, an illustrated middle-grade novel first published in 2016, became a phenomenon, rocketing to #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. The book has since inspired a trilogy that now includes The Wild Robot Escapes and The Wild Robot Protects. Brown’s work on the Wild Robot series and his other bestselling books have earned him a Caldecott Honor, a Horn Book Award, two E.B. White Awards, two E.B. White Honors, a Children’s Choice Award for Illustrator of the Year, two Irma Black Honors, a Golden Kite Award and a New York Times Best Illustrated Book Award.

BROADCAST | THE ROYAL BALLET | BALLET TO BROADWAY: WHEELDON WORKS

Mixed Programme; 1 Revival, 3 New Productions
Running time 180 minutes

Sensuous contemporary ballet meets the energy of musical theatre in four distinctive short works. Fool’s Paradise, The Two of Us, Us, An American in Paris: four works showing the remarkable choreographic range of The Royal Ballet's Artistic Associate, Christopher Wheeldon.

FOOL’S PARADISE
Luminescent and shimmering, Fool’s Paradise marked the first of Wheeldon’s many collaborations with composer Joby Talbot. It was created in 2007 for Wheeldon’s own company, Morphoses, and first performed in 2012 by The Royal Ballet.

THE TWO OF US
The wistful songs of Joni Mitchell set the scene for the UK premiere of The Two of Us, a duet of deep intimacy and yearning. It was created in 2020 for the Fall for Dance Festival in New York, and had American ballet dancers Sarah Mearns and David Hallberg in its original cast.

US (DUET)
Us is a tender duet danced by two men. It was created in 2017 for BalletBoyz and is set to Keaten Henson’s music.

AN AMERICAN IN PARIS (BALLET)
The Royal Ballet celebrates Wheeldon’s extraordinary success in musical theatre by performing the ballet scene from his Tony Award-winning musical An American in Paris. Set to Gershwin’s jazzy melodies, the musical is inspired by the 1951 film of the same name starring Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron. The musical went on to win four Tony awards. The full musical depicts a blossoming romance between the American G.I. Jerry Mulligan and a French ballerina, Lise Dassin. The ballet excerpt was Wheeldon’s take on one of the most memorable scenes from the film – an extended sequence in which the two central characters dance through Paris.

Lee (15)

Lee begins in the late 1930s, as Hitler amasses power in Germany. Elizabeth "Lee" Miller (Kate Winslet) leaves her artistic circle of friends and life behind in France, and travels to London after falling wildly in love with the art dealer Roland Penrose (Alexander Skarsgård). The two embark on a passionate relationship, just as war breaks out in Europe. Already a renowned photographer, Lee gains a job completing assignments for British Vogue, but is shocked by the restrictions placed on female photographers.

As Hitler’s regime takes over Europe, Lee grows increasingly frustrated that her work is constrained by patriarchal rules. Determined to be where the action is, she defiantly pushes against the establishment and, with the blessing of her friend and editor Audrey Withers (Andrea Riseborough), Lee overcomes enormous obstacles to get herself to the frontline of World War II. Compelled to document the truth, she turns her lens in the direction of suffering, and slowly begins to reveal the horrific loss of life due to Hitler’s diabolical crimes against the innocent victims of his regime.

Lee Miller carried out this dangerous work for the sake of the female readers of Vogue magazine, from whom the reality of war was largely kept hidden, and in the process yielded an indelible series of pictures which to this day continue to shape how we view these events.

Othello live from the Globe theatre

Watch the Globe’s ‘inspired’ ★★★★ (The Guardian) and ‘profound’ ★★★★ (Evening Standard) take on Shakespeare’s blistering tragedy, Othello at the Regal. Captured live in the intimate, candlelit Sam Wanamaker Playhouse earlier this year, this critically-acclaimed sold out production is not to be missed.

Celebrated by many, Othello has risen through the ranks. But can his hard-won reputation, his marriage to Desdemona, and his own subconscious survive the toxic systems that surround him?

Sixteenth-century Venice becomes modern-day London, as Othello grapples with many of the same issues that successful Black people have faced for centuries.

This is an Othello for our times.

Following 2021’s Romeo & Juliet (★★★★ ‘bold, clever, energetic’, The Guardian) in the Globe Theatre, Director Ola Ince debuts in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse with Shakespeare’s confronting look at the destructive impact of institutional racism, toxic masculinity, and a justice system locked in a vicious cycle of self-fulfilling prophecy.

Excellent wretch! Perdition catch my soul

But I do love thee! and when I love thee not,

Chaos is come again.

– Act III, scene 3

Content guidance: The play contains issues of domestic abuse, misogyny, anti-black racism and offensive language. The play also contains violence, including murder, references to suicide, and scenes of a sexual nature. This production features the use of stage blood and weapons (including prop guns, tasers, knives and batons), flashing lights and loud gunshots. A visual story is available for this production, which was initially created for visitors to the stage show in the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.
