Union Gap - Back to the 60s

The "Union Gap featuring Gary Puckett" or "Gary Puckett and the Union Gap" gained worldwide recognition when their first combined release “Young Girl” hit No.1 in the UK and No.2 in the USA. Next came “Lady Willpower” which hit No.5 in the UK and No.2 in the USA. Their next release “Woman Woman” only managed No.48 in the UK but hit No.5 in the USA. There were no further successful releases in the UK and in 1971 the “Union Gap” parted company with Gary Puckett.

In 1974 “Young Girl” was re-released in the UK and although Gary Puckett was now pursuing a career in acting along with his solo music projects, the new “Union Gap” was put together to promote the record in the UK and “Young Girl" was yet again a smash hit reaching No.6 in the UK charts. Eventually the band went their separate ways – all having great success recording and performing with many major artistes. The band were approached on numerous occasions to re-kindle the magic of the “Union Gap” but due to their individual contracts it was not possible, until in 1996 Mike Ellis (Keyboards & Vocals), Gerard Rogers (Drums & Vocals) and Barry Ruther (Guitar & Vocals) were able to launch the “New Union Gap” as a tribute to Gary Puckett bringing in the very talented - Tom Harding - on Bass Guitar / Lead Vocals.

The “New Union Gap” was an instant success on the 60’s circuit playing at all the major festivals, theatres and holiday centres throughout the UK and more importantly keeping the music of Gary Puckett and the Union Gap truly alive and vastly increasing airplay of their hit singles on Radio stations throughout the UK.

In December 2000 when Barry retired, Tom took on the role of Guitarist / Lead vocals, and the band recruited Simon Paul – a young and exceptionally talented musician / vocalist to take over on bass guitar & together with Tom kept the harmonies tight.

In 2006 Simon decided to depart & live in Fuerteventura & the band immediately recruited Graham James a talented bass guitarist with again a great vocal range & a wealth of experience.

January 2007 saw another change when the band welcomed the drums & vocal talents of Ian Tandy.

In March 2008 Graham James was made an offer he couldn't refuse which saw him leave the band & in came Paul Cornwell, another veteran of the 60s circuit with a pedigree second to none thus maintaining the Union Gap professionalism, musicianship & attitude.

The band has worked extensively to put together a repertoire of classic songs from the 60s to 90s, which they perform either in the original form or in their own unique style – many of which appear on their albums “This Time Around”, “Classics” & "By Request". The band have also devoted a great deal of time and effort to perfect their concert sound, which is always complimented wherever they appear.

Join us for the second of our Throwback Thursday screenings with the classic 1969 movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

Paul Newman and Robert Redford set the standard for the buddy film with this western classic. Sundance (Redford) is a mighty quick draw, and his partner Butch (Newman) is a gifted get-rich-quick schemer. With the law on their trail, the two pack their guns, and, along with Sundance's girlfriend (Katharine Ross), head for Bolivia, away from the men trying to bring them to justice – and death.

Grey Wolf is an acoustic Americana/old-time folk band from the Welsh Marches playing traditional instruments such as banjo, fiddle, guitar, dulcimer, mandolin and double bass alongside fine vocal and harmony singing. The band has headlined several of the prestigious UK's Old Time American Music and Dance Festivals and has appeared on radio, at folk clubs, festivals, and music and literary venues throughout the UK.

Grey Wolf was born in 2010 when Jim Allen and Martin Thomas began playing as a duo blending their shared love of American old time music with British folk music.  These two gifted multi instrumentalists were joined by a third some years later – the immensely talented Ben Walsh.  The fourth member of the band, bass player Andy Offer joined them in 2021.

One of the highlights of Grey Wolf's long career was playing a number of highly enjoyable gigs with Robert Plant.  The Birmingham News said of Grey Wolf's performance at the Kitchen Garden Cafe in Birmingham "There’s an equality to the group’s spread of sound, but each player is continually soloing-in-motion, rising up in turn, according to where the ears of the audience might alight at any one moment".

THROWBACK THURSDAYS | The Breakfast Club (15)

THROWBACK THURSDAYS | The Breakfast Club (15)

Join us for the first of our Throwback Thursdays screenings with the 1985 classic The Breakfast Club!

What happens when you put five strangers in Saturday detention? Badass posturing, gleeful misbehaviour, and a potent dose of angst. With this exuberant film, writer-director John Hughes (Sixteen Candles) established himself as the bard of American youth, vividly and empathetically capturing how teenagers hang out, act up, and goof off.

The Breakfast Club brings together an assortment of adolescent archetypes—the uptight prom queen (Pretty in Pink’s Milly Ringwald), the stoic jock (Repo Man’s Emilio Estevez), the foul-mouthed rebel (New Jack City’s Judd Nelson), the virginal bookworm (Edward Scissorhands’s Anthony Michael Hall), and the kooky recluse (High Art’s Ally Sheedy)—and watches them shed their personae and emerge into unlikely friendships.

With its highly quotable dialogue and star-making performances, this film is an eradefining pop-culture phenomenon, a disarmingly candid exploration of the trials of adolescence whose influence now spans generations.
