When a young woman is killed by a shark while skinny-dipping near the New England tourist town of Amity Island, police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) wants to close the beaches, but mayor Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) overrules him, fearing that the loss of tourist revenue will cripple the town. In the forests of Athens the fairies are in disarray - not only have the people of Athens been fly tipping all their rubbish into the forest and its rivers but the King and Queen of the fairies are having a major domestic row. Nature is in chaos!

Into this muddled mayhem dash two young couples arguing about who loves who, and a hapless bunch of amateur actors seeking a place to secretly rehearse their play. No wonder there is so much confusion.... and hilarity!
